Unlocking Retail Careers in West London with West London Alliance ‘No Wrong Door’ Event

The retail sector is a cornerstone of West London’s economy, employing one in six local workers and offering career opportunities that span customer service, logistics, marketing and management. Recognising the importance of this sector, West London Alliance, in collaboration with the West London Retail Skills Hub, successfully delivered their latest No Wrong Door quarterly networking event in July, this time with a dedicated focus on retail.

Hosted at West London Retail Skills Hub, next to John Lewis and Partners in Westfield London, the event brought together 21 stakeholders alongside key employers including URW Westfield, Heathrow, McDonald’s and the West London Chambers of Commerce. Together, they shared in-depth insights into the retail industry, from sector trends and skills gaps to employer expectations and recruitment pathways.

The programme featured a panel discussion that gave attendees the opportunity to engage directly with employers, ask questions and gather practical, insider knowledge. Guests included powerhouse entrepreneur Anisha Sharma, owner of four McDonald’s branches, who spoke about her journey in building a thriving retail business.

Sally Smith, Chief Operating Officer of West London Chambers of Commerce, reminded attendees of the power of strong connections in driving business success. She said, “It was a good event and West London Chambers were very pleased to be involved. Many of us started our working lives in the retail/hospitality sectors.”

Feedback from attendees highlighted the value of having such a variety of employers in one room and the quality of the discussion. Comments included: “Really good to hear the overview on the sector and skills gap and then speak directly to the panel” and “There was such a great range of employers to talk to and hear from!”

Common themes from the feedback showed that participants especially appreciated the variety of perspectives, the open Q&A format and the networking opportunities that followed. The event not only strengthened employer partnerships but also reinforced the WLA’s commitment to connecting West London’s employment and skills front line staff with the insights, resources and networks they need to support residents into meaningful and sustainable work.

West London Alliance remains committed to creating opportunities for residents, supporting employers to meet their skills needs, and working with West London Retail Skills Hub to promote retail as a vibrant and rewarding career choice.
